Giving your body the time it needs to rest is extremely important for anyone who wants to be functioning at their best. However, is avoiding the necessary hours of sleep actually dangerous? Here are just a few reasons why it is strongly recommended to follow a consistent sleep routine.
An inconsistent sleep routine can create significant issues for one’s ability to focus throughout the day. One study on a group of medical interns found that those who abided to a restricted schedule made 36% more serious medical errors than interns on a schedule that allowed more sleep. The repercussions of a sleep-deprived night can actually have similar effects on the brain that alcohol has, making it extremely difficult to stay focused and motivated. A subpar night of rest can also have a negative impact on one’s memory, as well as make driving more dangerous.
An inconsistent sleep routine can also cause problems for one’s skin, as well. Everyone is familiar with the puffy eyes that often accompany a bad night’s rest. However, regularly depriving your body of the sleep it needs can lead to more than just that. When you don’t get enough sleep, your body releases the stress hormone called cortisol. Cortisol breaks down skin collagen which is the protein that keeps skin smooth and elastic. Also, deep sleep promotes the release of a hormone that assists with muscle growth in adults. Without proper rest, the skin will not be able to expand or contract to its potential.
The repercussions can be even more serious for some people. Poor sleeping habits have been shown to have such a negative effect on the body that it can even result in heart disease. A lack of sleep can increase insulin resistance, which can be a precursor to type 2 diabetes and other types of circulatory issues. Studies found that those who skip out on a full night of sleep are at greater risk of heart disease or stroke than those who sleep between 7-8 hours a night. When asleep, the heart rate slows down to recover. When the heart is not given time to rest, however, it will begin to expand. An enlarged heart will take in less oxygen and work less efficiently.
