Additional Treatment Methods
Your lifestyle can impact the severity of your sleep apnea or snoring symptoms. The good thing about that is, you can adjust your lifestyle to ease some of your symptoms. Used alongside our convenient treatment methods, you may notice a significant difference.
Bodily exercises to reduce your weight in order to relieve symptoms of OSA, but mouth and throat exercises can help too. These oropharyngeal exercises can strengthen and stretch the muscles that contribute to sleep apnea, lessening the impact of your symptoms.
Exercises to Improve Symptoms
If you don’t feel like yelling, don’t worry — this exercise is noiseless. Just open your mouth as wide as possible until you look like you could be yelling. Holding this position for several minutes can help to strengthen the muscles in the back of your throat.
Ever tried to touch your tongue to your nose? Even if you can’t, this exercise can strengthen your jaw and tongue.
Like the nose touch, this exercise is fairly straightforward. Trying to touch your tongue to your chin can be beneficial for your muscles.
Soft Palate Blowing
This exercise is both silent and convenient — all you have to do is breathe. To begin, close your mouth and breathe in through your nose. Then push the air out through your lips, making sure to try and keep them closed.
You may feel some difficulty in the back of your throat, but that’s good. Those are the muscles you’re trying to strengthen.
Jaw Tension Relief
Tension in your jaw can worsen the effects of sleep apnea. To relieve some of that stress, close your mouth and touch the tip of your tongue to the roof of your mouth. Then, keep your tongue touching the roof while you try to open your mouth.
Snoring can be worsened by a weak tongue, as it can slide back into your throat. To strengthen your tongue, you can try placing the tip of your tongue behind your front teeth. Slide your tongue back towards your throat and curl it.
Another tongue and throat exercise consists of pressing your entire tongue up on the roof of your mouth. Try to get it so there’s no space between your tongue and the roof, and hold for a couple of seconds.
