Getting the Relief You Need
Sleep apnea substantially reduces the amount of oxygen that your brain and body are receiving on a nightly basis. Over time, this becomes seriously detrimental to your health.
Dr. Ralph Mensah is an experienced sleep dentist who’s recognized for his sleep apnea care by the American Academy of Dental Sleep Medicine. He’ll make sure you get the correct diagnosis for your snoring and sleep apnea — then he’ll find the treatment that’s right for you.
Getting the Right Diagnosis
A lot of our patients don’t realize that dentists have essential knowledge about the airway, which is where you’ll find the obstruction that causes sleep apnea. Dr. Mensah frequently notices signs of sleep apnea during regular patient checkups.
As part of your sleep apnea consultation, Dr. Mensah will ask you some questions about the type of sleep you’ve been getting. He’ll also check to see if you’re exhibiting common sleep apnea symptoms, such as loud snoring and feeling tired and irritable during the day.
The next step is arranging a sleep test, which is the only way to know for sure if you’re suffering from sleep apnea. The results from your sleep test will be reviewed by a qualified sleep physician who will provide you with a prescription for sleep apnea care. If it turns out you’re not suffering from sleep apnea, Dr. Mensah can still treat your snoring.
CPAP Isn’t Your Only Option
A lot of our patients have already tried CPAP and they didn’t like it. Patients frequently stop using CPAP because it’s loud, awkward, and it forces you to sleep on your back all night long.
Dr. Mensah has had great success treating snoring and sleep apnea with oral appliance therapy. Instead of using a big, noisy machine, oral appliance therapy treats sleep apnea symptoms with a small device that fits easily in your mouth. It relieves your sleep apnea symptoms by gently repositioning your jaw to keep the airway open while you sleep.
